Verdi said: “To copy reality can be a good thing, but to invent reality is better, much better.” Michael aims to invent reality in his paintings, as the objects and settings that he uses are mostly imaginary. He never set up a still life, but lets the work build itself as it progresses. Ideas ebb and flow, additions and subtractions are made during the course of the work until the moment arrives when it all looks and feels right. This is something Michael finds exciting as one never knows how the work will evolve or how it will eventually materialize.
